SHAKESPEARE
The 9th grade year ends with a Shakespeare production.
Students read Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream in order to contrast the two plays, write a final paper examining a historical or literary theme present in one of the texts, and seminared on topics generated by the class.
One key question students examined in this project was, "What specific decisions does an author make in order to create either a tragic or romantic narrative?" Students used their comparisons between the two plays to draw conclusions. Students also wrote on themes such as the nature of love, perception, honor, and duty as portrayed in one or both plays.
The final product in 2014 and 2015 was a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Students worked in "production groups" (Set design, Directing, Costume, and Promotion) and also acted in a variety of roles in a one-night showing of this classic comedy.
